One year ago, on April 15, 2023, a war in Sudan broke out between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with almost nine million internally displaced people and refugees outside the country, tens of thousands in casualties and millions at risk of famine.
The current civil war has deep roots in Sudanese history, from the postcolonial period to the military dictatorships – 35 military coups from 1956 to 2021 – until the Sudanese Revolution of 2019 which was soon turned into a military rule.
In this infographic, Lizartistry depicts some of the crucial historical and recent passages that have afflicted the Sudanese people and that, with the complicity and/or absence of the international community, make it difficult to see an end to the current violence.
