While a child in Sudan dies every hour and 19 million children are out of school, a Human Rights Watch report documented on 9 May that “children were piled up and shot” in West Darfur by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that has been fighting the Sudanese army since 15 April 2023 in a struggle for power.
In the city of El-Fasher, the last domino yet to fall in Darfur, the RSF has taken control of nearly all the main cities in the western Sudanese state. Over two million people, including 750,000 children, are surrounded by the paramilitary group which began this latest offensive in April. The RSF, previously known as the Janjaweed, are the most feared group in the city and throughout the Darfur region. They have been responsible for massacres during the 2003-2006 genocide and the conflict over the past year.
With the year-long war impacting the delivery of humanitarian supplies and the country facing a possible famine in the coming months, the appeals of the Sudanese people to prevent the worst remain unheard.
