Mario Gerada
Mario Gerada is a social worker who has worked in the fields of development and migration for most of his professional life. For more than twenty years his work focused on issues of marginalisation, and violence experienced by minority groups. He led research looking at the intersection of marginalisation and habitat focusing on food security and sovereignty in Malta. He designed the project Ħwawar u Fjuri which introduced a method of revisiting peoples’ own narratives of being “out of place” through an ethnobotanical lens; thinking in and with gardens. Mario is regularly invited to lecture about René Girard’s Mimetic Theory and Thinking, Mixed Migration, and the roles that narrative and the more-than-human play in people’s search for home as they navigate new places, habitats, and ecologies. Between 2023 and 2025 Mario served as one of the five Commonwealth Foundation’s Civil Society Advisory Governors representing the European Region.
